Background:

Gene Hunt grew up in Manchester, England with an abusive and alcoholic father. When he was old enough, Gene performed his national service before joining the police force at the age of nineteen. Gene worked his way up through the ranks until he became a detective chief inspector. His first mentor, as a constable, was Harry Outhwaite. Like every new recruit Gene saw everything in black and white. The law was the law. When he learned that his mentor was corrupt, Gene turned him in. Unable to deal with the humiliation, the decorated war hero and local legend committed suicide. Gene was never the same again. A month later, he took his first backhander.

When Gene was promoted to Detective Inspector, his boss was Harry Wolfe. Harry taught Gene everything that he knew about his job. It's where Gene learned to do 'anything' to get a conviction. He has been known to plant evidence and beat a confession out of a suspect when he believes the suspect is the criminal. To him, the means always justifies the ends. This style of police work clashes violently with Sam Tyler's when he joins the force. Gene is all instinct and Sam's style is methodical, follow the evidence trail. Together though, they make an outstanding team.

Personality:

Gene Hunt is about as politically incorrect as someone can get. He is a man of his time (1973) and he is a homophobic sexist pig. Despite that, Gene is intensely loyal and expects it in return. He will also give credit where credit is due. He doesn't believe that women will make a good cop, but Annie has proven herself that (in his mind) is the exception to the rule. He accepts her as part of his team … eventually.

He is a huge fan of Western movies, and sees himself as the sheriff of Manchester. Gene believes that he is the protector of innocents by any means necessary. Despite his shades of grey approach to police work, Gene has a strong sense of right and wrong, especially when it comes to serious crimes such as murder.
